When I was in my early teens my dad decided to sell his property and on the day of the auction, I wandered into the kitchen where I was astonished to see my father sitting at the table with an auctioneer agent standing over him shouting into his ear and banging his fist on the table in front of him yelling . . .
"Are we on the MAAARKET Mr M__,
ARE WE ON THE MARKET!!".
I watched my father's face go as white as a sheet. My dad had always been a quietly spoken man. They were clearly pressuring him, and who even knew what "on the market" meant? (I know what it means now, the agents were saying "give us permission to sell it for less than you want!" so that the hammer could go down and they could declare a sale and the agent could get paid - it was all about them).
I never forgot the despicable high pressure tactics of that day, of these men pressuring my dad, and using "agency language". My dear father had sacrificed so much to build that house.
I remember thinking, “There has to be a better way.” Determined to find it, I immersed myself in the world of real estate, eventually becoming an agent and studying negotiation at its highest levels. What I discovered confirmed my instincts — there is a better way to sell property.
